“Janey, I—“

“Tell me. Then I’ll know exactly how deluded you are.”

I catch her gaze and hold it. We’re not in a scene, but disrespect is not permitted. “Be careful,” I warn.

She subsides, dropping her gaze. My cock approves, but I’m oddly uncomfortable with the notion she may actually be afraid of me. Some kidnapper I am…

Baz is hampered by no such delicate sensibilities. “Have you told him yet?” he demands around a mouthful of potatoes.

“Soon,” I growl. He should fucking know better than to question me in front of an audience. I’ve no problem with plain speaking in private but I won’t have it with others around, even Janey.

She latches on at once. “You haven’t sent him a ransom demand?”

I glare at her, then at Baz. “Let him wait.”

“What? Why?” She stares at me, incredulous. “I don’t understand.”

“Me neither.” Baz really isn’t helping.

“Shut the fuck up,” is my incisive response. “I’ll let you know as soon as there’s anything to tell.” Maybe.

“I don’t understand,” she repeats. “If not for the money, why are you doing this?”

“It is for the money. Business, that’s all.”

“How much? How much do you imagine you’ll make out of kidnapping me?”

“If you ever get round to asking for it,” Baz chips in.

I’ve had enough. “You, get out.” I narrow my eyes, glaring at Baz. “You must have something useful to do.”

“Not especially. And I haven’t finished my dinner.”

“You’ll have to ask Tatiana to warm it up for you. Now, fuck off.”

My tone leaves no room for further argument and he knows he’s pushed his luck as far as he can. He nods to Janey and makes himself scarce.

“Why?” she whispers as his footsteps recede. “What’s this about?”

At last, a question I am prepared to answer.

“Revenge,” I state. “Savage owes me, and he will pay.”

She tips up her chin. “This is about the art fraud?”

Now it’s my turn to be taken aback. “So, you are well informed, for a mere employee.” My tone drips with sarcasm.

“Caraksay is a tight knit place. Of course I know what’s going on. Ethan framed your brother for selling a fake painting.”

“My brother-in-law,” I correct her. “But, yes. He cost me a great deal of money, and ruined my family’s reputation in the at world.” The Kaminskis had dominated the illicit global art market until Ethan Savage started playing games with us. It was a lucrative trade, entirely dependent on trust and confidence. After the fraud was exposed, no one who matters takes us seriously any more. It will take years to repair the damage Savage wrought on our standing in that world.

“Illegal art world,” she sneers. “You’re nothing but criminals.”

“And Savage is any better?”

“Whatever. But I don’t see how—“

“I haven’t contacted him. Yet. But he’s going mad searching for you.” I know. My sources have reported to me. Ethan Savage has realised she’s missing and is tearing Glasgow apart in his desperate search for his missing pet.

“He’ll be worried, yes, but even when he knows what this is about, he can’t undo what happened.
